Subject: [ferrethealth] ferret with extremely large abdominal tumor
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I took my ferrets into the vets on Thursday to get their shots and
to have 6 y.o. Komay's BG done. When the vet palpated her abdomen, the
vet found a very large mass. about the size of a golf ball. Because my
cat and dog are going through some health issues now I really didn't
notice anything wrong, I just thought her pot belly was from the pred
she's on. She didn't have the tumor a couple of months ago when I took
her to the vet so obviously it has grown very quickly. The vet wasn't
sure how much time she had left.
When I brought her home I noticed how she seems to be having a hard
time going to the bathroom and she's hardly eating anything. When she
tries to go to the bathroom she runs all over and then tries to scoot up
but she can't seem to get anything out so she keeps doing this
repeatedly until she's finally able to get something out. Her stools are
mushy and she is hardly able to get any urine out. The vet thinks it may
be because her tumor is pushing against her stomach and bladder so she's
not able to get much food or water into her stomach.
My question is because the vet is so inexperienced with ferrets
should I just let Komay live out her life for as long as she can or
should I have the vet try surgery? Has anyone had any experience in
this?
I don't drive so I can't take her to another vet who knows more
about ferrets. To take the bus would takes us about 11 hours, the train
does not allow animals on it, everyone I know either has to work or is
busy trying to take care of her kids. I was thinking about trying to
sneak her onto a train but I know I couldn't in good conscience do that.

Thank you. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Sheryl
