Subject: [ferrethealth] Adult-onset Nesidioblastosis?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

In what ways does insulinoma in ferrets differ from Adult-onset Nesidioblastosis,
and is there any chance that -- since insulinoma cases vary so much in behavior
to some meds like Diazoxide -- that some ferret cases might be Adult-onset
Nesidioblastosis? (Certainly, the responses to treatment of cases of carcinoma
or lymphoma in the pancreas can also drop blood glucose differ markedly from
insulinoma, so causes other than insulinoma exist at least on rare basis.)

I know that insulinoma may involve MEN1 or Mody (2/3) genetic variations, but
that in humans with Adult-onset Nesidioblastosis these variations are not
necessarily found, and it sounds like in this condition tumors tend to not be
easily found due to non-proliferation of beta cells (always? usually? sometimes?),
also that in humans Diazoxide tends to be a useful med for the disorder but
when not a partial pancreatomy is needed. So far, I have not been able to find
other species info on the condition except a tiny bit in dogs (and ferrets are
descended from the dog branch in Carnivora), but in some ways the descriptions
remind me of some ferret cases so I am curious, ****though I know the curiosity
is likely misplaced and in such a case arises from gaps in my education, a common
problem of those of us with some somewhat-related graduate courses but not an
actual medical study background****.
