Their is some thinking this may be caused by a virus or is it genetic?

Juvenile Lymphoma is usually the form of lymphoma a person thinks
of right off the bat when the thymus is enlarged on imaging and there
is trouble breathing. Most ferrets who get it are under 2 years in age,
though some older ferrets have had it.

Being a juvenile malignancy is thought to indicate that JL might be more
inclined to involve a genetic component. This is partially because age is
considered to play a part in increased advent of malignancies, though a
research study (rodent) indicates that species size also appears to play a
part in rates of malignancies in general for any given species:

It is an interesting new perspective.

A study done at MIT showed that there strongly appears to be a viral
precursor to another lymphoma, clumping lymphoma, to which the animals
typically are exposed 2 to 3 years before the advent of the disease.

Here is an excellent resource for learning about each of the types of
lymphoma found in ferrets:

Some are bothered by necropsy or operation photos so for those individuals
in the FHL membership printing in B&W and using small post-its to cover the
photos seems to be a workable solution allowing them to get the information
needed. Others of us find the images very informative.
