I wonder if he caused a bacterial dermatitis by transferring oral bacteria to small tail wounds
when he groomed and then it took off?

We were very surprised to see how easily our Hilbert got bacterial dermatitis secondary to
skin irritation from a food allergy. His skin first got very inflamed with some small cracks
and then the bacteria set in. In that case, though, he had huge sores. Some of those areas
had too much skin damage to regrow fur. In a quarter century he is the only one we have
had do this.
