Subject: [ferrethealth] Conditioner
To: FHL <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Just another thought.. on conditioner.

Conditioner is made to make hair shafts less likely to tangle. Hair shafts tangle, mostly, because the cuticle is raised and intertwines with the cuticle of other hair shafts.

Conditioner works because it is made with a substance, often parafin or other wax, to fill-in the spaces caused by raised cuticles (think of fish scales for shape and positioning of the cuticle) thus allowing each shaft to lie separate from each other shaft.

If it can fill in spaces on a hair shaft - it can fill in spaces on the skin. The skin reacts; then you have black heads, white heads, boils ---

I don't use additives... just don't like them.

I haven't worn my own hair long in 4 or 5 years and only then to cut it off and send to "Wigs for Kids", which see, so I don't use additives on my hair either.

I do wonder if "conditioned" ferrets are better, worse or the same with tail hair loss..

I have washed them and added conditioner and begun scrubbing tails, and added a humidifier. This has never been an issue before except for an occasional ferret.
