I really don't know. We didn't see he had any discomfort like itching or anything like that. Although our sons are in heated room in winter, rat tail came out in summer only and recovered in late autumn. They are not caged and are fed "natural diet".
Although tests came back negative, our son was given treatment against bacteria, then mites, then fungus (if that's what it's called in English?) just to make sure, but they did not help. We also tried treating against simple dry skin (with acne) with no effect. According to blood work and our experience he does not have any allergies. That's why it made me think it was related to some inflamation inside his body somehow as there was no other change in his life before rat tail didn't appear again.
On the other hand, three of my sons have/had rat tail which recovers on its own in autumn. Two of them are adrenal, and one of the adrenal ferrets has acne, the other one has none. There's no difference in how fast they lose hair and regrow it in cold season, both takes days -less than two weeks- in both adrenal and non-adrenal cases.

I wonder if he caused a bacterial dermatitis by transferring oral bacteria to small tail wounds
when he groomed and then it took off?
