Subject: [ferrethealth] Pepcid for upset ferret stomachs
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Jeff,

I can only relate to your question from an experience with a dog but it
still should help. Try looking for famotadine in the over-the-counter isle
at your local/cheapest pharmacy. I used to break the Pepcid tablets and
give them to my dog a quarter tablet at a time. It's been quite awhile
since I've used any so you might even want to see if the Pepcid/Famotidine
comes in pediatric and/or liquid form. If it does, either way, the vet
should be able to tell you "how much" to give your fuzzie. Just make sure
you're not picking up a med that says "ranitidine" which is different from
the "famotidine."

If you have a dollar type store near you -- they often carry pill "cutters"
and pill "crushers" depending on "how" you're administering the meds. If
you have to "crush" the meds, try sandwiching it between some baby food
(baby food, crushed pill, more baby food) on a spoon. It works with people
(who typically get applesauce instead of the baby food) so I'm hoping the
baby food might just cover the taste enough to get it into your fert. If
you have part of a pill to work with, try putting it into a soft treat to
see if your fuzzy will eat it (and not notice the meds inside.) I'm not a
vet, so please check with your vet before doing any of this.

If syringe feeding is the easiest, ask your vet if you can mix the meds
into baby food and then do the usual syringe feeding. My guys will even
eat watered down baby food if I've added water to get the last bit of baby
food out of the jar. Try using a bit of warm water as you mix the baby
food and meds -- it will help dissolve the them into the food. Right now I
have two cats who receive hot water, meds, and canned food twice a day
which is the easiest way to get their meds into them.

Much will depend on Neo's tolerance and how well the baby food or treat
masks the med's taste. Hope some of this helps and thoughts and prayers
are with you and Neo.
