Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Pepcid for upset ferret stomachs
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I currently have a IBD ferret on 1/4 tablet of Pepcid a/c a day, per my vet's recommendation. Famotidine is available in a liquid form, but the Pepcid tablets are more cost effective, if you don't mind a little extra work. My local pharmacy had the pill cutter/crusher. I crush the 1/4 tablet and mix it with some ferretone. This is the regular strength Pepcid, not extra strength. It's amazing what a difference this has made in my ferret's daily comfort.

As a side note, this ferret had always been a fabric chewer. He didn't eat it, at least not on purpose, but was still ingesting fiber, which is obviously no good. Once we started him on regular Pepcid, the fabric chewing stopped. I think he was chewing fabric instead of grinding his teeth, or maybe more accurately putting fabric between his teeth while he ground them. He would chew the fabric hard enough to generate a loud "skreek" kind of noise. I mention this in case anybody else has a chronic fabric chewer--in such a case, it would be worth checking for GI issues.

Regards,

Regina
