Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Insulinoma and adrenal surgery for Neo - perplexing problems
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Jeff,
Sorry to hear Neo is still having problems.
You may be dealing with multiple issues, here. Part of the problem
is definitely related to the pancreas and low blood sugar, and
possibly the pancreatitis.
However, I would be suspicious that there is another player. That
Neo's potassium is low warrants blood tests to check the electrolyte
ratio, if it hasn't already been done. Even if the ratio is ok, if
one or both of the values is low, it can still spell problems. I
lost a female because the ratio was ok, but both values were 'a bit'
low. Zoey just failed to bounce back following surgery, and before
I was able to get the florinef for her, she began bleeding from her
rectum and passed the following day, despite treatment.
Ask your vet about Neo getting a shot of Percorten to see if it
helps him. Even if he doesn't 'need' the percorten, it won't harm
him. When we thought Donovan was having an Addisonian Crisis, we
were advised to give him a triple dose of the percorten. He bounced
back for a day, but then crashed again, but it was due to intestinal
lymphoma.
We give florinef and pred to a good number of ferrets following
adrenal surgery, even when only one gland was removed. It seems to
help them adjust much better, helps their appetite, and makes a much
better recovery. I usually watch to see when they are eating well
on their own, and just wean them off of it. If they start to fail,
I can begin the med, again, but it usually isn't necessary. With
one ferret, it was needed for 3-4 months, but that wasn't the norm.
Depending on the ferret and the adrenal tumor removed,
adrenalectomies can be a shock to their systems. With some, they
are off and running -others, it seems like the remaining gland has
to wake up and start working again. Those are the ones the Florinef
( or percorten V) helps.
Neo may need a shot of percorten. It's definitely worth asking his
vet about.
