I'm no vet but I certainly know what you're going through. I have 10 ferrets and they've had diarrhea off and on for 2 years now. Tried every kind of anitbiotic you can think of, Immodium, pepto, panacur, etc. I almost lost one this summer and was going to take him the very next day to let him go but he suddenly pulled through but still has bad poops. One of mine has a watery explosion at least twice a day and then the rest are runny. I give them a mix of chicken gravy with kibble, pumpkin twice a day. I add Activa yogurt to one of those feedings. Mine have not suffered any weight loss or other symptoms but have the diarrhea. Some of them have gotten to the point they hardly ever have it so I'm hopeful they are building immunity to whatever it is. The one that I almost lost and one other are the worse so I'm thinking they are the carriers, IF there is a carrier. No one can determine what this is. The first poop sample showed 'spore producing bacteria' but didn't respond to
any treatments. The next sample showed yeast and they can't figure why. That's why I added yougurt. I think its all the anitbiotics they've been on.
Good luck!!!

Hi,

I'm a lisc. vet tech w/ a big problem. I'll try to keep this as
short as possible.

Tonka, 6.5 yr, mc. On pred and diazoxide for insulinoma. Has had
diarrhea for the last 5 mos. I don't mean a little loose stool, I
mean EXPOLSIVE diarrhea. He did have giardia, it took 3 treatments-
2 rounds of flagyl and one of panacur- to finally go away. Still the
diarrhea remains. I have tried everything! Immodium, flagyl, tylan,
pepto, kaopectate, amforol. He's been on pred prior to the onset of
the diarrhea. I was going to have intestinal biopsies done on him
but the day after I scheduled surgery another problem arose. He
suddenly became paralyzed in the hind end...and it comes and goes!
Sometimes he can use his legs and sometimes he can't. We increased
his pred dose to try to help the neuro. signs and since then his
diarrhea is a million times worse! He's normally on 1mg BID but was
increased to 2mg BID. As soon as the diarrhea got worse I stopped
the high dose. He was only on the higher dose for 2 days. Now I
really can't get his intestines under control. His GI transit time
needs to be slowed down but with what? Nothing works. He goes pretty
much every hour and it's basically liquid. If it's IBD it certainly
isn't responsive to pred. What else can I do for him?

Besides all the meds I've tried I give him SC fluids and
supplemental feedings as needed. His appetite was great but has
recently decreased. I just don't know what to do for him! Do I have
anymore options? If anyone knows of any ferret specialists in NY
please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Serena
