Jeff - many folks have great success with poking the very tip of the
tail. You might try that. Dog and cat people sometimes use ears, but
I've never been able to even make a try at that. My ferrets move
their heads away then instant I try to get my hands on an ear - I just
distract them with ferretone on the belly, so they're not really
restrained. In my opinion, the goal of using a glucometer with this
small sample size is to get the sample in a stress-free manner.

Anyway, I've used toes for years without incident. What is your vet's
objection to this site? I'm not arguing, and I wouldn't suggest going
against your vet's advice, I'm just curious. :) If dirt is a
concern, the toes can be cleaned (maybe the concern is dirt going in
after the sample is taken, though). In any case, it helps to use a
warm, damp paper towel before trying to get a sample, to massage the
toe and get more blood in there.

Best wishes,
-Pam S.
