Always try a bit of the cream first, ditto butter. Just because they are
mostly to all butter fat so the protein intolerance consideration is
reduced or isn't there doesn't mean that all ferrets can stomach them.
Our Sherman, who had IBD, turned out to be so negatively affected by
the cream that he almost died from acute worsening of his intestinal
inflammation and diarrhea. He got to spend some days hospitalized
on IV and then required further at home nursing when he was well
enough to come home. Most will not have problems, but try a little bit
first and if that works then gradually increase it so that if you wind up
with someone like Sherman that ferret will be spotted early enough
to be kept safe. Don't make the mistake we made.

Our own usual favorite for added calories is a/d, a canned food
available from vet hospitals. I have also heard great things about
Carnivore Care but a few people have mentioned that not all ferrets
take to it readily, something which has not been a problem in the
decades (or close to that) that we've used a/d.

If IBD is present in a ferret or ferrets then what can be safely used
could be reduced. Some ferrets with IBD have a range of flesh foods
or starches they can't eat. Some react to all poultry. Quite a
number don't tolerate chicken.

IBD sometimes clumps in a home in a specific group of ferrets, with
vet posts in the past implicating a few specific past illnesses acting as
the triggers because such families tend to fine before and after and
due to health records and isolated infection causes.
