Subject: [ferrethealth] Two subjects: Stress and depression; bald spots
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello everyone,
I have a few subjects I need to ask questions on. The first is about
depression in older ferrets. We had six ferrets, all between the
ages of 5-7 years, who are all housed together and get along very
well.
One of them, Biff, recently passed away, and the "alpha", Summer,
has become sluggish. She wanders around during playtime (they're
allowed free-roam of the house for 2 hours a day) almost like she's
looking for Biff, and usually ends up speed-bumping in the hallway
or wanting to be carried around. She doesn't play much anymore and I
worry that she's depressed or ill. She's still eating and drinking
normally, but still, I worry. They all seem a bit slower lately.
I just wanted to know if anybody could give me a little more info on
ferret depression and things like that. Also, if it's wintertime, do
the ferrets just play less? I haven't noticed this before.
My second subject of question is about two of our ferrets, both
around the age of 6, one male one female. They shed their coat
normally but the fur on their tail didn't (and still hasn't)
regrown. It's only on the base of the tail, right up near their body
that is bald. The rest of the fur on the tail filled out just fine.
This has us baffled. If anybody has any suggestions, please tell me.
Both of them show no symptoms of adrenal disease.
Thank you very much and sorry for the long explanations!
