Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Reaction to Melatonin Implant
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I'd certainly be suspicious due to the short time between receiving
the implant and having the problem.

We have over 100 critters implanted that we're tracking the results
for now. To date, only one has had a potential problem. 36 hours
after receiving the implant, Wayne was in a smiliar state to the
ferret you mentioned. The only other symptom I would add is profound
dehydration; so much so that, and this is a bald critter, his skin
seemed purple because it was so "deflated" with dehydration.

Wayne was a new arrival and the stress of finding himself in the
shelter could well have caught up with him in the 36 hours after
receiving his implant. He arrived a spunky monster and quickly
started kicking ass and taking names in a large social crew...but he's
middle aged, so he might have had some stress on board.

I nearly beat myself to a pulp trying to decide whether to remove the
implant or not. I started him on all the usual treatments, especially
fluids. He started making progress right away, so I reasoned that he
wouldn't make any progress if the implant was the trouble...??? He
was back on his feet in 2 days after the crash, then he just needed a
bit more time to regain his fighting weight and get back to full
spunk. Within 2 months of receiving the implant he had excellent
results: full hair regrowth (he was REALLY nekkid), soft skin, thick
as a tree trunk, etc. And spunky to the max once more!!!

So I've kept track of the situation and will look for others, but as
yet he's the only critter who's had any trouble within 4 weeks of
receiving an implant. We've implanted 112 to date.
