Subject: [ferrethealth] vena cava ligation?!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My little adrenal Willow went in for an ultrasound the other day, and it seems that her
adrenal tumor has wrapped itself around the vena cava without actually obstructing blood
flow. (She was a rescue, and her original owner waited too long to get help.) Well, what the
vet wants to do is medicate and wait, in the hope that bloodflow will eventually be cut off
so that she can then safely ligate and remove the tumor. Vicki has since told me of a vet
who ligates and operates. I really don't get it either way. We're talking about THE main
artery, so how is it possible for a ferret to survive without that bloodflow, whether the
constriction comes from a tumor or a vet? Splain it to me, Lucy. And of the two courses,
strangulation by tumor or by surgery, which is best and why? Finally, how much more
expensive than a regular adrenal surgery might this be? I don't know this (San Antonio)
vet's "regular" prices, but I'd think a procedure like this must cost more.
Oh, one more thing, Willow's santa hasn't contacted me yet, and it's mostly my fault
because I didn't know to put my email in the body of the message. But if anyone knows
who it is, please send them my email address.
