Hello again Mary Jo,
Took a look at the pics, certainly looks like
sarcoptic mange. We had a ferret that looked very
similar when she arrived at the shelter in Miami a
number of years ago.
The vet checked for mange but nothing showed.
Meanwhile ferrets that were directly under her started
with the same symptoms. At this point I too was
extremely itchy. I had been bathing the ferret
continuously to debride all the fur and gunk that was
on her feet and legs and apparently contracted the
mites meantime.
We had done several tests each time nothing
showed, but when I started to itch we checked again
and there was some dead mites and debris. We treated
with Ivermectin(since Revolution was not invented) and
after 3 shots, the problem was controlled.
It took about 4 months before the ferret was
completely clean with a brand new coat of fur and
after recovery she was adopted to a member of our
ferret club and did not have any further problems for
many years after. Soaking and keeping skin clean and
lubricated was very essential, plus changing linens
and isolating away from other ferrets a necessity.
The other ferrets that were infected were those,
with impaired immune systems, as some in the same cage
were not affected. Immune systems needed a boost to
counteract the mite damage, using natural herbs and
vitamins was very effective.
Mites, like fleas, continue to multiply and will
seek any warm blooded host, so either treat with
Revolution or with Ivermectin to kill the mites, their
eggs and consequently their offspring, if not they
will continue to cycle---Angela.
