Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Major find/Question-unknown illness!?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have heard back from Dr. Matti Kiupel, the pathologist who was studying the recurrent
coccidia. There was other work from the Balticum that was able to be used in conjunction
with what they had, so they could finalize that this hard-to-treat (because it is so
persistent) organism is Eimeria furonis. There is enough sequenced now that it should be
able to be diagnosed by the pathology department at Michigan State in the future, and I
guess later by others. That is a new diagnositic ability, folks!

Because there was material from only one of the outbreaks it is not known if this is the
current problem, but it could be. The description so far sounds a lot like it, but other
things have looked similar sometimes: lymphoma, extreme Helicobacter infections, etc.

In that same letter I was told that my info given on EGE (the mink coronavirus with
intestinal symptoms in mink) and my ECE info were correct, so you can put aside that
concern.

Also, clarification info given to help you:
There is Canine Distemper, with some strain variations.
Feline "Distemper" turns out to be a misleading name for feline parvovirus
(panleukopenia).

(BTW, work is still on-going on the FIP-like illness in ferrets. I still hope to get feedback
on what was said in the pathology conference.)
