There are alternatively ferrets who are negatively affected by certain protein sources.
You are right, though: tackle one possibility at a time so that the cause can be narrowed
down.
For a balanced high protein kibble look at ones like Pretty Bird's Natural Gold. For a
balanced, made at home food look at this (in another resource for which Pam Sessoms
gets thanks):

Here are some links from the marvelous Miamiferret site that Mike Janke, one of FHL
moderators, has created (with many thanks to the wonderful people who created each of
these things mentioned tonight):

Remember that meat by itself is NOT a balanced diet. It doesn't matter on that score if it
is raw or cooked; in either condition it lacks a number of minerals and other needed
nutrients, so it is okay to use for a sick or terminal animal but should not be the diet long
term for any for whom recovery is possible. Meat by itself is a far worse diet long term for
those who can survive than the balanced options, whether those are prepared at home or
are high grade kibbles. (Mentioning it because a lot of people don't realize how lacking
meat is in many nutrients, and I don't want your little one to go from bad to worse if this
drags on a long time.)
If the ferret's urine gets acidic on the high protein diet then the individual may be prone to
cystine stones (something I have on my mind today having had to send someone info on
them privately this afternoon). Such individuals need a lower protein diet, but they are in
the minority. We actually have two ferrets with that problem at home, but are able to
control it.
