Subject: [ferrethealth] all this diarreah and antibiotics
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I've followed these diarreah discussions without butting in - listening for something more than what if", "well Maybe", etc.
I feel so bad for the fuzzies who have these problems and pray in ernest that none of mine get whatever this is (these are - as the case may be).
What I am wondering now, after a bout of coccidia in ONE of my boys and a ? in another, both of whom are responding well to meds, soup and babying, is - is it true that coccidia is hard to detect, some unknown number of vets do not recognize it, and it could take 5 or 6 tests easily to finally identify it? I was told this by a non-medical person who seems to believe this to be accurate and up-to-date info. I can't agree with or refute the info - I just don't know.
If the answer to those questions is yes then I wonder how many of these ferrets being kept on perpetual antibiotics are misdiagnosed .. gee and what's scarier is for the ferrets that have been on almost every antibiotic known commonly to man and still not cured (loose reference to definition) -- well I wonder what horrible, microscopic supermonster lives in their tummies and bowels that our meds can't kill.
or do I misunderstand.. is the common thought that this melee against the ills of diarreah is stopgap. Is it a fight to keep the ferret on balance while a bigger disease is kept at bay... such as IBD...
just pondering and hoping someone sees my dilemma and can lift the fog of my confusion about what is going on here.. if that's what it is

Good luck. This diarrhea thing is the worst thing I've run into and no end in site. Mine have been on about every antibiotic and diarrhea remedy known. I now just stive to maintain them but mine didn't lose weight or appetite except the two boys mentioned during the worst phase of this.
