Subject: [ferrethealth] Are we making matters worse in some cases?Re: all this diarreah and antibiotics
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I know how useful antiobiotics can be, but sometimes I wonder if we
are doing more harm than good by medicating. Please note that I am by
no means saying we shouldn't medicate our kids when they are sick! I
am just trying to look at things from another point of view.
Administering meds can be a very stressful event for some ferrets,
depending on how it is done. Bad Stress = diarrhea with ferrets, so
are we only making things worse? Also, metronidazole is SOOOO
commonly perscribed by vets during bouts of diarrhea that are not the
most experienced with ferrets, because it is almost always used in
dogs that have chronic diarrhea from stress or other illnesses. But,
as many of us know, ferrets HATE metronidazole due to the horrible
bitter taste. There is a super interesting article in the nov/dec
2006 issue of ferrets magazine about side effects from meds. The
title of the article is "The good, the bad, and the fatal" written by
our FHL own, Dr. Jerry Murray. I suggest everyone read it, as I
learned a lot from it. In there he mentions the issues one can
encounter with antibiotics, as well as other meds. Could we be over
using antibiotics and creating resistant strains? I know this happens
with people. Also, I know there is a horrible stomach virus going
around in people right now that causes awful diarrhea. Could are kids
maybe be geting it? I know they can get our flu...something worth
thinking about.

Happy holidays everyone!
