Subject: [ferrethealth] Are we making matters worse in some cases?Re: all this diarreah and antibiotics
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Antibiotic resistant strains arise when an inappropriate med is used or when a round of
antibiotics is not completed (so there are stronger survivors). Much antibiotic resistance is
traced to over-use of antibiotics in food animals -- giving them to animals who are not sick
in an attempt to get a larger size. In some countries that is now forbidden.

That said, over-use of antibiotics and many other meds can have downsides and might
produce both diarrhea and stress as Amanda said.

Also, Biaxin, although more expensive, can be less stressful than Flagyl/Metroniazole, an
excellent point of Amanda's.

When we have to give a long run of antibiotics most here (unless they have real problems
with dairy) tend to get yogurt with live cultures which perhaps might replace useful bacteria
destroyed by antibiotics.
