I had a ferret die on the table having this operation...bled out. I
wouldn't have agreed to the surgery had I known this was a
risk...thought it was just a routine adrenal surgery. This was many
years ago.
Several years later, I had another ferret with this problem. But this
time, I had access to an EXCELLENT surgeon. He did what I think he
called a "clamp and run," which I think means you clamp off the
artery then stitch like hell b/c you only have a very brief window
to cut that blood flow before permanent damage occurs. The ferret did
fine and lived several more years before dying of an unrelated
condition.
Personally, I still think it is a risky surgery and would only
consider it light of other factors, including the ability/experience
of the surgeon and the age of the ferret.
Good luck!
