Subject: [ferrethealth] Diarrhea and meds: why's this happening?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello everyone,
I've got five ferrets with an outbreak of diarrhea, between 3-7
years old.
Two of them were vomiting last night, and are lethargic today. They
each drank a little water and ate a tiny bit of Gerber chicken, and
haven't vomited anymore since early morning. The other three have
more appetite and energy but still have the diarrhea. To go in
depth, the poops are a bright yellow-ish color and quite slimy. In
the past (at separate times) I have had fuzzies with a similar
problem, both of which have taken amoxicillin and the vet gave us
BeneBac, which is a good bacterial supplement (much like yogurt but
without the upsetting dairy) and made a full recovery.
The whole gang is going in to the vet today, probably for
antibiotics, but with all the recent talk over diarrhea and
antibiotics, I needed to ask if anyone thought this was something
worse. And why why why do my ferrets keep having this sort of
problem?! What am I doing wrong? We try to keep things as clean as
possible, and the vet never tells us what could be causing this.
~Emily
