Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: posted pics of before-after melatonin implant

Lupron Depot has just one serious drawback which makes our requests
for these for our shelter ferrets cautious and after a bit of blood
testing to see if the ferret being considered for Lupron has a
healthy liver; the chances of liver shutdown increase after the
second and then increase yet more after each successive Lupron Depot
shot. Only one of our shelter ferrets survived four years on five
shots (most of the twenty-odd ferrets who recieved Lupron Depot for
adrenal symptoms at our shelter ((The Ferret And Dove Sanctuary))
lived comfortably for around two years and then experienced liver
shutdowns that killed them) and that was Sandy LeQuick Ferret whose
pictures are still up on our web-page because she DID survive so
long and symptom-free from her long-term Lupron shots (her pics are
somewhere in the middle of...
http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/ferret_rescuer/index.html )
For those who come in already badly health-compromised and already
over 6 or 7 years of age, we're opting for whatever relieves their
discomfort without threat of any side effects possibly pushing them
over the Veil's edge.
Otherwise, and for everyone who has had their ferrets for most or
all of the ferrets' lives, I certainly agree with you, the survival
rate within the first two weeks after most operations is
still "iffy", whereas the survival rate after the Lupron Depot
treatment is 100 per cent as well as good for at least two years'
worth of a happy and comfortable ferret, and, as demonstrated by
Sandy LeQuick Ferret, possibly up to four years' worth (or even a
bit more) of that comfortable and happy living.
