One of the reasons why I ask is because I know of a CA vet who sees a
lot of ferrets who stated that ADV testing in CA is unnecessary
because ADV isn't in the state yet (I'm assuming this vet feels this
way because he doesn't believe he's seen a ferret with this disease
and/or heard of other confirmed cases in CA).
**There are several ferret vets (one very well known) in my immediate area
who do not routinely test for ADV as they feel that it is not a problem in our
area - I however, do test and have seen cases of it. You don't find the
disease unless you test for it.
Then again, there are vets not two miles from my practice who do not
recommend yearly testing for heartworm disease in dogs and do not put their patients
on any preventive. I've treated several heartworm positive animals from their
practice.
If you don't test and don't find the disease, you can say that it's not in
your area, because your head is in the sand. That doesn't mean the disease is
not a problem, just that you're not looking for it.**
