To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

If you can cope with the needs of three while one is ill (and it sounds like you are experienced
on that score) then you may find that adding a playmate for the young one may also perk up
the elderly one.

We have purposely set up situations in which extremely ill ones could watch youngsters at
play while remaining aloof when they needed to do that (also essential, esp in ones who have
heart disease). It really helped the sick ones. In fact, watching one male kit play so helped
Meltdown (who ultimately went something like a year and a half with dilative cardiomyopathy
with ventricular bigemini and occasional trigemini) that we named that boy "Jumpstart".

The trick, of course, is that the new ones should be clear of any contagious diseases, and
that is not always as easy to be sure of as any of us would like, so use your best judgement
on that and have the new one vet checked right away, plus quarantine at first. (Speaking as
someone who had to once medicate all for coccidia...)
