Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: possible toxoplasmosis outbreak
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Some toxoplasmosis notes:

Dr. Bruce Williams, who is a ferret specialist and veterinary
pathologist, said that if what was looked at was feces then
what was seen would have been yeast or coccidia because
unlike in cats toxoplasmosis does not pass in the feces of
ferrets.

Instead it encysts in tissues. (If you look at past FHL vet
replies you will find times when toxoplasmosis was worried
about in ferrets which were times when there appeared to be
a possible brain disease.)

If what is being seen is yeast then something entirely different
is happening and the yeast is just leading people astray.

Currently, there has been a problem in some areas with a
recurrent (and thus hard to treat) nasty coccidia which is hard
to spot because it is not in the Isospora genus which is currently
what is usually looked for, but is instead Eimeria furonis. Maybe
this is another possibility? It is a terrible form of coccidia which
has killed ferrets this year.

Knowing to look for that and that is can be recurrent can be the
first step sometimes in effective treatment.
