Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: possible toxoplasmosis outbreak

Because toxo can not be passed via feces in ferrets we are sure we are
looking at something else. Two other ferrets from the same house were
suspect also, test showed the parasites in only one of the fecal
samples but since they are cage mates, both are now isolated and on
the same med's as the originals. The doc is treating agressivly for
coccidi.

And now it has become fatal. One of the two original ferrets started
passing frank blood rectally... no stool, just blood. There was
evidence of bleeding under the skin as seen as bruising around the
ribs and back bone, and the roof of her mouth was also bruised &
ulcerated. Her temperature had a spike to 106 then came down slowly
but never actually came back to normal values. Then the seizures
started coming more frequently. When she started whimpering it was
decided that we would go the humane route. At 2:15 p.m. supportive
care was stopped and poor little Missy was allowed to cross the bridge.
There will be a necropsy, pathology & histology done. It took a bit
of talking to get the owner to agree as he wanted to lay his baby girl
to rest. But I was able to convince him that we needed to know
exactly what we are dealing with because others are still battling it
and without knowing what it is we're fighting we are just treating
blindly.

Great big thank you to Sukie & Dr. Williams for the info you have
given me to pass along to our doctor. If she hasn't already, I'm
sure Dr. B. will be in contact soon.

Thanks all, I will keep you posted.

Debbie
