Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: older ferret (6.5yrs) choking on kibble
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

While your little ferries choking problem doesn't
sound quite like the two I've experienced I figured
I'd share just in case - or it helps someone else.

Ferret #1 - I had a very small ferret, like 1.2
pounds, who also had a very small head and she would
frequently (like twice a day) get her kibble stuck on
the roof of her mouth. When that happened she would
move her mouth chewing and paw at her mouth to try and
dislodge it. Was pretty scary for both of us and
probably made the top palate of her mouth sore. I
would stick my pinky finger in there and pop it loose.
Since she would "only" eat one type food (I think it
was 8-in-1 ultimate with raisin juice) I figured it
was the shape of the food compared to her mouth so I
started breaking each piece in half while she ate - by
hand! Didn't think of a food processor. haha. Of well,
gave me quality bonding time . ;-)

Ferret #2 - Sometimes after eating he would start
making gaging motions and usually throw up - didn't
seem to matter what he ate (except baby food which
stayed down - but came out the other end - sigh). He
sometimes threw up the food but often it seemed more
like a musceously whitish sticky stuff. He would
sometimes be doing this for 5 or so minutes. He had
was old and had various problems but this didn't start
till about 1 month before he died (while throwing up!
- from the stress of it I guess). This seemed to start
happening after the vet put him on iron
supplementation for anemia - on a liquid
vitamin/mineral type supplement called Pet-Tinic. I
suspect that is what caused the throw up because of
the timing and also because one I suspected it I cut
his dose in half - so instead of all at once he got
half twice a day - after that his throw up incidents
went down, but not away. Wonder if anyone else has had
a problem with that?

So that's it. Good luck to you and your ferrie.
