Hi Sheryl,
My ferrets just got over having something, not sure if it was stress
caused IBD or a viral thing. They had mucousy bloody diahrea off and
on. All 3 are nervous ferrets that get stressed easy to begin with
and have had stress type poops off and on for awhile. They had the
sensitive fecal tests done that were sent out and they all came back
negative. While at the vets office they must have pooped about 3
times in a matter of 30 minutes and they got bloodier each time so I
suspect stress made it worse. I did the metro/pepto/amoxi thing for 2
weeks and it improved but they got stressed out due to the taste of
the flagyl. I had also changed their food to Gerbers stage 2 lamb
baby food while they were on medications. After awhile, I changed it
to lamb baby food mixed with a can of A/D, which 2 of them are still
on. My vet ended up changing the medication to Chloramphenicol at a
dose of .50ml (1/2 ml 2x daily for 10-14 days) They were also on
pro-pectalin paste which is the original recipe of Kaopectate before
they changed it but in paste form, which contains Kaolin, Pectin and
Microencapsulated live intestinal organisms - stops diarrhea,
soothes intestines and restores normal intestinal bacteria balance -
it is made for cats and dogs but my vet gave me the dose for ferrets
which was .40 ml 2x daily. I also carafated them 20 minutes before
meals. They have not had any bloody poops since but one still has
soft poops as he does have IBD. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in for
ideas. Also your vet can order Z/D kibble which can be softened and
blended in with lamb baby food and water to make a soup. I believe
Z/D is for allergies which should help if she has an allergy to
chicken which is in A/D.
