Hi,
It's probably due to my limited language skills that I got a bit confused... To me it reads as Suprelorin may help treat the disease itself in some cases, not only the symptoms.
Can it be an alternative to the surgery? At least, sometimes?

I know this resource about Suprelorin used in ferrets: http://homepage.mac.com/exoticdvm/.Public/AJVR%20Des%20manuscript.pdf
According to this, surgery is still the best if the ferret is a good subject for surgery...

Some of the vets here use Suprelorin as a choice to avoid surgery, which is unclear for me why? When asked the answer was "because latest studies prove it to be a way to treat the disease". Maybe they believe that fur regrowth equals recovery? I've found no resources about it. :(

I'm also thinking about if Suprelorin could help delay surgery? My son was operated on some months ago, and according to the biopsy he had hyperplasia but no cancerous cells in his gland. Right gland surgery is a "no-no" here, and both glands removal is an extra "no-no", which means we probably won't have any in the near future or at all. I'm afraid of his right gland becoming effected, too, so I'm thinking if we should have waited with the surgery?
But how do you know when surgery cannot be postponed any longer?

As for Suprelorin and melatonin used together... I know only one vet here who prescribes both and he said they mustn't be given together because the interfere. I have no idea why as both are somehow natural hormones. :( But maybe someone knows...

Thanks a lot for all the help,

Nelli

Suprelorin implants (deslorelin acetate) is another product that
stops the stimulation (LH) to the adrenal glands and then the
adrenal glands stop over producing the sex hormones and
adrenal androgens.

In current studies deslorlin/Suprelorin appears possibly better than Lupron depot and
much cheaper, too. I am really, really hoping that it gets approved for wide clinical use
here in the U.S. soon. Right now it is okayed here only for some experiments.

I do NOT know if anyone has done experiments with deslorelin and melatonin used
together but hope that is safe and even better.

When hyperplasia is present Lupron can actually shrink the adrenal tumor and it may help
slow more serious growths. The best that melatonin does is that it slows and maybe on
occasion slightly shrinks hyperplasia.
