"Mother-in-Law's tongue is sansiveria, also one of the plants known as snake plant (not
snakeroot which IS poisonous but is eupatorium and related to aplopappus). On a quick skim
it does not seem to be in
http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pro_apcc_toxicplants
but check me on that score.
It is also not listed in my human poisoning book so now I am going to
http://cal.vet.upenn.edu/poison/index.html
where it also is not listed.
Could you go to that site, please, and see if a different plant also goes by that name? I know
that a philodendron type goes by "mother-in-law" but it causes contact irritation not neural
symptoms.
It is possible that the plant had nothing to do with what you encountered. Betelnut and
finger cherry are among the ones that can cause eye damage, apparently.
