To me, mother-in-law's tongue has always been another name for dumb cane, or dieffenbachia, which would indeed cause those symptoms if chewed on:

They do have a separate, similar listing for "mother-in-law," different scientific name but same family:

A quick Google search tells me that I am not the only one who calls dumb cane mother-in-law's tongue.
