Ferrets are resistant to salmonella but when they get it it is often
fatal. I do not know how much of that is simply salmonella being
hard to treat in ferrets or is because there are the very, very bad
antibiotic resistant strains which are common now.

Whether ferrets are resistant to E. coli I think is still up in the
air; certainly Black Footed Ferrets on raw foods have been documented
dying of it. Also, certainly, ferrets who survived E. coli have been
carefully documented as have acquired kidney damage as a result.

I did a LOT of quoting from _Biology and Diseases of the Ferret, 2nd
edition_ in the FHL and various studies (posts from sukie or sukiec),
and Dr. Jerry Murray (posts from AFERRETVET) also gave raw food info,
plus I think I carried two E. coli ferret study abstracts there: the
one on BFFs and the kidney damage one. There may be more from
others as well. I seem to recall something like 4 or 5 vets between
the FHL and FML stating that salmonella is very hard to treat when it
does take off so is better avoided, but I could easily be
misremembering so check me in the two archives and vet texts, please.

Notice the temperatures for things like salmonella and some
trichinosis species (came up as part of a wild food discussion) in
studies and that standard freezers don't reach the temps needed for
some to kill the organisms.
