Okay, I think some confusion happened here.
Both posters are completely right but the WHYS
are what are causing confusion.

The links she sent show the importance of
vaccination because they show what Canine
Distemper, an easily caught disease does.

Yes, in that case the disease was caught from
a vaccination. If my memory serves, Hungary
does not yet have any Canine Distemper Vaccines
which are studied SPECIFICALLY for use in ferrets.

This is the same RISK we used to have in the U.S.

What is done when there is not a ferret-specific
vaccine to use is that dog vaccines WHICH ARE
NOT GROWN IN FERRET CELL LINES AND DO NOT
HAVE LIVE VIRUS are used. The problem arises
because the manufacturers
1. can have errors (which it sounds like happened
this time) but errors are not always found in time for recalls
(Just see
http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.html
for a glimpse of how many happen here in the States.)
or
2. if the vaccine is not made SPECIFICALLY for use in ferrets
the manufacturer may make changes which are safe for the
animal the vaccine is primarily designated for (dogs) but very,
very hazardous for ferrets. This distinction led to some cases
of canine distemper in ferrets here in the U.S. in the past, too.
That is why before there were specific canine distemper
vaccines for ferrets the vets we used ALWAYS checked with the
manufacturer to make sure that no changes had been made
to the vaccine: not ferret tissue cell lines used, no live
virus used.
