Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: difficulty urinating (continued)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

"In February Mojave started having difficulty urinating. He would
stretch himself out and push his abdomen in and out in order to go.

He is not losing hair, is not acting agressive towards my other
ferret, and does not show any other signs of adrenal disease.

I took him to the vet and she said that because he's not having any
signs of Adrenal Disease she's not going to run the TN panel and that
we'll just monitor him.>"

I have had three ferrets who turned out to have adrenal tumors who had "no symptoms" or atypical symptoms, including normal-looking adrenal glands on ultrasound. One we were dealing with his insulinoma-when we were in doing his partial pancreatectomy, we discovered a small but discolored tumor on his right adrenal (it turned out to be an adenoma-nonmalignant); his adrenal problem may have been masked by his insulinoma (though I usually have had it the other way around). His adrenals had looked fine on ultrasound-small and regularly shaped.

Another had his only "symptom" be that he started licking urine off the other ferrets when they got out of the litterbox. He ended up having a bilateral adrenalectomy for two cortical adenomas. Only one adrenal looked at all suspicius on ultrasound, and it was borderline.

The third had an obviously enlarged adrenal on U/S, but she had no outward symptoms other than she got fat-mist LOSE weight.

I have one right now who just started licking urine-no hair loss, trouble urinating, or any other classic or even unusual symptoms, and let me tell you that we are running a TN panel this week! I'd rather catch it now, especially if your guy is having urinary troubles, than wait till he is blocked with prostate problems, anemic or worse. Just my opinion based on my experiences.

Good luck!
