Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret wandering with eyes closed
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Our ferret, Bear, (yes, the one currently being treated for heart and kidney issues) also has glaucoma. He has had cataracts since he was a kit.
In any event, if a ferret is walking around with their eyes closed, it's my opinion (I'm not a vet) that they are in pain. Like others have said, this ferret needs to go to the vet ASAP. Whether his tear ducts are not working (which I've seen once before-- remember Rusy, Pam?) or he has glaucoma, his eyes almost certainly HURT. If there is a lot of interocular pressure, he might lose one or both eyes altogether if he's not started on meds right away. A buildup in eye pressure is no fun.
:(
Caution: Bear was first put on Timolol for his glaucoma, and that med is not good for heart patients. As soon as we discovered his heart condition, we switched him to Trusopt, with which he has had no problems. The problem is that the Trusopt costs about $100 a bottle (which will last a very long time), so be prepared. (The Timolol is about $10 a bottle.)

There are also meds the ferret can be given if his tear ducts are not working.

Either way, yes, I would think his eyes hurt right now, and it's not JUST bright sunlight that should do that. Definitely go to a vet. ANY vet is better than NO vet! :(
