Hi Carol,
reading just what was there reminds me of one of my ferrets. He too was walking around with (just one ) eye closed. Thinking that it may be infected ( although it didn't look like it) I took him to the vet. It turned out to be glaucoma. He ended up with two different drops two or three times a day. I had glaucoma myself at one time so I know how painful that can be.
This may be one thing to look for. I hope your friend will take him to the vet just to make sure it is not that.
