Subject: [ferrethealth] Help, Sick Ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,
I have a rescue ferret "George" and I have had him about a year. Not sure on his age, but older. Up till last week he has been healthy.

Last week I noticed that he was pooping out of his box and as I watched him it seemed like he was just going in and out of the box over and over. If he was on a top level he just backed into a corner there. He has never pooped outside of his box before. I noticed this right away so the behavior was possibly only a few hours old when I took him out of the cage to see what was up.

Well, his rectum was prolapsed and looked red and sore. His poop was not really runny but it looked "seedy" That is how I would describe it.

I took him to the vet right away and they did a fecal and it had a low bacteria count so they put him on clavamox. I do not have $900 to do all the work up and as well surgery for the prolapsed rectum. He looked well other wise while at the vet, strong and moving around well. They did not see or feel any outward signs of lumps or swellings with exam.

I took him home and he started to go down hill fast. He got weak and as well seemed to drop weight over night. He was still eating and drinking great throughout this entire time.

I got some of the high calorie paste and he has been eating that well, he is still eating ferret food and drinking water so he seems to be picking up weight again.

Right now his rectum is still prolapsed and he seems to have slowed down on how often he is pooping and his poop looks more normal. He is also stronger and moving around well.

Last bit of information: He gets Mazzuri Ferret food. Plenty of water. I have been using the liquid in the water that is supposed to make their poop not smell as much and I did stop using that as soon as he started to show signs of being sick. Just wanted to add that incase anyone thinks that may have caused this problem

My Questions:
What does it sound like?
Can prednasone help with the prolapsed rectum? or any thoughts about how to help that with out surgery?
Any other suggestions.
Debbie
