Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: ferret with heart problems
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

With the heart also enlarged I would wonder about the possibility of congenital
cardiomyopathy and want a consulting veterinary cardiologist.

Years ago there was someone in Australia who contacted Mike and me because she
needed to figure out an approach for a male ferret with a similar problem, but his heart
was so bad that the vet was afraid that going into rut might kill him. I think that they
wound up using Suprelorin Depot to chemically castrate the ferret. Suprelorin Depot is
only available in the U.S. for experimental purposes for ferrets but I wonder if one of the
related compounds would also work. **IF YOUR FERRET IS AT SIMILAR RISK** I am going to
suggest that your vet might want to consult with doctors Bob Wagner at Pittsburg (I think
that is a state U of PA, but not sure.) and Nico Schoemaker in the Netherlands if possible
since they are the big gurus on those compounds.

arrhythmia. Today he had his EKG and chest x-rays. He has an enlarged heart but his
lungs are still clear. He has a definite heart murmur. The results were sent to Cornell
University and they strongly advised against putting him under anesthetic so he did not
get neutered. The doctor is not sure what is the best course of action at this point since he
is still very active and all other organs are fine. He is only eighteen months old. Can
someone give me a prognosis on this disability?
