Subject: [ferrethealth] Question: reaction to anesthesia
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My 4ish yr old ferret, Rogue, had a tooth pulled on Friday. The vet
had him for less that 15 min. Dr. said that because he was big he
might take a while to come out of it but don't worry about food or
water till he does. That evening he still hadn't come out of it and
I started to worry. I talked to the vet but taking him in wasn't an
option. The kids had seen Rogue pee but not poop. I tried syrup to
raise his blood sugar if he needed it. It didn't work. He seemed to
be getting dehydrated so about every 2 hour though the night I forced
about 3 mL of water down him. In the morning, he was same or worse
and he hadn't pooped. So I gave him a worm bath. It worked, he
pooped but it was diarrhea. I went and bought some pepto and some
gatorade. I gave hime the pepto and mixed some stuff with gadorade,
baby food, ground softened zoopreme and ferretvite. I forced about
3mL of that down him every 1 1/2 hrs for the rest of the day. By
evening he was doing better in that he would wake up more easily but
still only wanted to sleep. He started trying to drink on his own
and later started eating some on his own but it wasn't much so I
pushed the mix on him every 3 hrs for the rest of the night. Sunday
saw him eating and drinking well on his own and today he's back to
his old self. Has anyone else had a ferret react this way? How did
you handle it? How could this have been handled better? I am
sharing my story so that I will know better what to do if this ever
happens again and because I don't want anyone else to feel as lost as
I did. Thanks for sharing your help in advance.
