Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Raw Instinct
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I see way to many starchy products and plant products in that food to
suit me, but I wouldn't feed a kibbled food anyway, instead I offer my
ferret a whole prey/meaty bone/ raw foods diet.

Her whole prey consists of mice, rats, chicks, crickets, superworms,
nightcrawlers and baitfish. Her meaty bones consist of chicken necks,
turkey necks, chicken wings, legs, thighs and carcass, cornish game
hens, and rabbit. Her meats consist of chicken livers, gizzards,
hearts, ground beef, pork, chicken, turkey and lamb when available. Yes,
she eats live or frozen whole prey.

I realize not everyone is cut out to offer such a natural diet to
their ferrets, but feeding such a kibble with so much plant products
isn't going to offer your ferret the best health in the long run.

In order to formulate a kibble there has to be some sort of binder,
this is usually done using a starchy food.

Most folks think that because a product doesn't list "corn" or "wheat"
then there aren't any grains in the food. this is a TOTAL
misconception on the part of consumers and IMO a complete deception on
the part of the mfr.!

The very defintion of "grain" is a small seed. So ANY seed product
whether it is labeled a seed or a pea or a whole grain - is a grain.
p;ant seeds are usually packed with carbs and sugars necessary for the
seed to germinate, hence they are packed with energy. Which is great
for herbivores - something the ferret is NOT.

That food ingredients listed show:

Tapioca, while a root, it nevertheless is an extremely starchy
product; starches are carbohydrates.

Pumpkin seeds are grains.

Flaxseeds are grains.

Spinach, broccoli, alfalfa are fibrous plants which ferrets have
extreme difficulty in digesting.

The other herbs and plant stuffs listed aren't necssary for ferrets
(or cats) and are added to make the humans feel good about feeding
this kind of junk to their animals.

IMO, a kibble diet isn't appropriate for ferrets and a CAT kibble is
even LESS appropriate.
