Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: commercial vs home made foods

True, but most people are not as careful about homemade foods and haven't bothered to
read much, so I think that one of the AVMA's points as well as mine is that if a homemade
food is decided to be used then rather than just make an at-home food and assume that it
will be fine enough a person should use resources and even consultation by people who
have actually studied such as http://www.petdiets.com/ to avoid medical problems too
often encountered in ferrets (and cats or dogs) fed homemade foods.

One thing I found very interesting in the diet article in a recent issue of Ferrets magazine
was how the vets told about medical problems encountered, not just disease problems but
nutritional ones, due to unbalanced diets.

I guess what I am mainly saying, and what I think that they are in their article is not that a
balanced diet can't be achieved, but that it very often is not achieved because people
throw their own things together and just have faith in them (and faith tends to create a
blind eye too often) instead of learning about them from expert resources, and that too
often people don't weigh the resources.

Also, having been justly corrected on this point myself in the past, I wanted to get across
that many vets turn out to have a lot more nutrition training -- and that from people who
have studied the topic throughly -- than they are often given the credit for, so I think that
the assumption that they would have had little (which for many of us dates back to
internet assertions of a few non-vets who are also non-dieticians and who made that
undermining assertion about others to try to lend weight to their own diet comments)
needs to not be just accepted, but needs to be challenged and verified. (Yes, I know that I
often write "verify, verify, verify" and I confess that at times I fall down on that myself, too,
as I did on this score.)
