Subject: [ferrethealth] Advice needed for study protocol
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I am posting here in case some of you may have a simple answer. As a
part of my dissertation I will be obtaining evoked potential recordings
from ferrets using needle electrodes and an earplug. I would prefer to
NOT sedate any animals, but tire them out with play and food so they
will sleep naturally or at least remain relatively still/calm while I
am performing the 15 - 30 minute test protocol. Since owners are
willing to drive to the lab on campus, I want to have them stay as
briefly as possible.

Have you had any success with anything in particular AND, if you are a
vet, if it becomes necessary to have the owner "help" them a little in
this dept., what might be simplest. If I have to have vet and
anesthesia for every ferret, it will take forever.

BTW, I have been doing this with newborns and compromised infants for
more than 25 years. Like I said, I am trying to make this as stress-
free to the ferrets as possible. Many times for infants a little
benadryl helps them cooperate. I don't want to do heavier and plan to
use ferretone liberally!

Comments? Suggestions? Thank you.

Renee

[Moderator's Note: quick comments to readers:

Don't assume that this means big or wide needles. There are some forms of research that use wires as thin as hairs as needle electrodes for mobility research which are barely felt and sometimes just plain not noticed. I don't know the aspects of these needle electrodes, but they may be similar.

Also, anyone who has had neural tests will know that in some of those tests an electrical charge can be sent to the patient and that hurts if a live nerve is found, but in testing such as mobility research that shows when specific muscles fire as the animal is filmed in motion the charge goes in the other direction, so no charge delivered to the animal. The muscles themselves by firing send a slight charge out of the animal along the wire so the animal does not feel anything. I suspect the Renee's research also reads from the animal rather than delivering to the animal.]
