Are you sure your vet didn't also give him a shot of
pain medication? What you are describing sounds like
what can happen with a hefty dose of pain meds.

What you did sounds generally good (especially under
the circumstances), just be aware that you were still
not really getting enough fluids into him (at least
per what my vet has me give mine).

Just as an fyi, after 20 years of doing this I avoid
surgery on Fridays unless it's an absolute emergency.
While I have a great primary vet, I've found emergency
care on weekends to be very hard to come by when I
need it most. Also, if you want to be able to handle
emergencies you may want to get your vet to show you
how to give subq (under the skin) fluids to your
ferret. It's not difficult. I always have a bag of
fluids in my frig with a seperate vial of glucose I
can add to them if I get an insulinomic ferret that
crashes. My fluids, dexamethasone and antibiotics
(along with a little tube of decorative icing for
insulinoma crashes) are the main stays of my emergency
meds I keep, especially since my vet is over an hour
and a half away.

But, you did well keeping him going, glad he's okay
now.
