Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Ferret lower back pain: HELP!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I would strongly recommend at least basic bloodwork; a blood glucose from a strip (do they mean glucometer strips? that's a bummer thing to run out of at a vet clinic) is not really going to be enough to determine what is wrong with her; those strips aren't necessarily going to give you the most accurate picture of her BG, either, but can give a good baseline. If we relied on those solely here and were out of them, we certainly wouldn't make a sick animal wait to get bloodwork-we would get blood and get it to an outside lab ASAP. We would do this even with an in-house glucometer check and compare results.

But a BG is just not enough anyway, I think, to make a solid determination without checking any other blood values or a urinalysis, etc. Xrays are great, but they are just a piece of your diagnostic puzzle...

Good luck,

April (vet tech and ferret owner)
