Something that I learned from a raw diet for ferrets yahoo group is that you don't give just the meat like a sirloin steak or cut the meat off the thigh or breast of a bird and hand it over or even had it over with the bone.

The bone is good, even necessary for both the marrow and for the calcium from the bone itself, but carnivores also need the internal organs as Sukie said for minerals and even vitamins.

They also eat the parts of the animal that we consider unfit to eat.. the skin, the intestines, stomach, the thorax (throat area), the bowles, I would think minus the feces, but not so with all carnivores...

BUT in addition to making sure that you feed ALL of the animal you also need to make sure that you feed animals from all age groups.. tender newborns along with mature breeding aged adults and even tough old birds are thrown in... ONE more thing... in addition to making sure you feed ALL of the ANIMAL and feeding ANIMALS of ALL AGES.. you also need to make sure that you offer all of a variety of animals of different ages.

A chick and quail egg with a rat body chaser for breakfast today and a rabbit hindquarter for dinner.. tomorrow they get the chicken neck and right rear leg with some gizzards etc etc.. you get the picture right...

Knowing those differences can make some of the references out there more clear. For example, providing a whole animal diet balances the diet, but there are people who have assumed that feeding just meat is as good when that sole diet long term results in a series of nutritional deprivation disorders from rickets onward.
