Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret Not Eating
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Here's a description of his symptoms:

On Wednesday May 9th I noticed my ferret had turned his food dish
over. He grew up eating the Marshall Farm diet for about a year and
then I started to switched him to "Sheppard & Greene Super Premium
Adult (Ferret)".

On Thursday May 10th I noticed he hadn't eaten the refill I gave him
and when I tried to get him to eat some of the gerber's baby chicken
he wouldn't touch it. He was still drinking plenty and active. I
could tell he was loosing weight though.

He still would not eat on Friday, so I took him to my vet and he had
lost .31 pounds since his yearly wellness visit about a month prior.
His fecal exam was negative for intestinal parasites. My vet said he
didn't feel any blockages but that his spleen seemed slightly
enlarged. They did some blood work, and had to send it off. In the
mean time he thought it might be a Helicobacter infection, so he
prescribed Amoxidrops (twice daily) and a Famotidone Suspension to
calm his stomach. He also gave me Prescription Diet a/d
Canine/Feline.

Over the weekend my ferret finally started to eat voluntarily, but
only the a/d diet. He continued to drink normally and his stools
lightened up in color.

On Monday May 14th, we got the blood work back and the vet told me
there were indicators in the blood work that made him suspect
something was going on in the pancreas. He explained that there could
be many causes and went over some of them. I asked about tumors but
he said there weren't any indications pointing toward them. He said
that if he lost more weight or there were any changes in symptoms the
next step would be to do an ultrasound. Otherwise, he said to keep
him on the antibiotics and come back in a week or so to redo the
blood work.

Aside from a slight increase in appetite (he still will only the a/d
diet voluntarily) nothing has changed.
