My ferret is to have a small growth removed Fri. How long do I need to fast him? He has insulinoma. Is on Pediapred 3 x day 0.3. Thanks Carol and Zeek fuzzie

We don't generally fast insulinomic ferrest at all, really, at my clinic. If we do any fasting of them, it's only for a few hours, maybe four (roughly the length of one digestive cycle), because we'd rather take the chance that they might vomit (and we are extra careful when intubating and monitoring for any signs of vomiting or aspiration( than shock their system with a hypoglycemic crisis. Your vet can also put them on IV fluids with some dextrose in them, too. (We put all of our surgical patients on fluids while they are in surgery at least, and insulinomic ferrets or adrenalectomy ferrets, especially ones with a lot of blood loss, are kept on them postop, too.)

Hope that helps!

Best,

April
