Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Combining Melatonin implants with Lupron Injections
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Given their existing heart problems and that heart problems do differ a lot among
individuals my inclination would be to have your vet run the idea past the consulting
veterinary cardiologist, with the specific details of each individual. Ferrets adjust to
melatonin but offhand I don't know if having anything with a sedating effect during the first
days while adjusting would be okay. The consulting cardiologist would be able to assess
their own condition and decide.

Follow that precaution with a range of things. There are herbals that are not safe with heart
disease (and some which aren't even good for healthy hearts), some supplements when
given in large amounts can cause acute cardiac problems, for example mega-dosed niacin
which can cause flushing, nausea, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, dehydration, low blood sugar,
blood-clotting abnormalities, liver toxicity, a dangerous drop in blood pH, abdominal pain, a
run-up in his white blood cell count, and an irregular heartbeat. Coma has resulted in some
people who mega-dose naicin.
